Dewan Architects + Engineers Launches Dewan Award for Architecture 2025 Competition

News

Dewan Architects + Engineers, a leading multidisciplinary design consultancy firm, is proud to announce the launch of the Dewan Award for Architecture 2025, held in association with the Tamayouz Excellence Award. This year’s competition invites architects, students, designers, and studios from around the world to reimagine Baghdad Central Railway Station — a historic landmark in the heart of Iraq’s capital.

Once a vital transport hub, Baghdad Central Railway Station now operates with limited services, outdated infrastructure, and minimal public engagement. Yet its structure remains sound, offering a unique opportunity for architectural renewal. Participants are encouraged to propose visionary but practical ideas that reimagine the station and its surroundings as a sustainable, inclusive transport node — with improved connections to the Al-Alawi Garage Terminal and Al-Zawraa Park, and a revitalised public realm that unifies these key urban spaces.

The top three winners will be selected by an independent panel of judges chaired by Wendy Pullan, a Professor of Architecture and Urban Studies at the University of Cambridge. The first-place winner will receive $6,000 or a six-month employment opportunity at Dewan; the runner-up will be awarded $3,000, and third place will receive $1,000. All three will be invited to attend the Tamayouz Awards Ceremony.

Reflecting on the award's impact, Dr Mohamed Al Assam, Executive Chairman and Founder of Dewan Architects + Engineers and founder of the Dewan Award for Architecture, said:

“The Dewan Award for Architecture was born out of a belief that good design can be a catalyst for meaningful change. Each year, we’re inspired by the vision and creativity of participants who engage with complex challenges and offer bold, thoughtful solutions. As we launch the 2025 cycle, we look forward to seeing ideas that not only honour Iraq’s rich cultural legacy but also imagine its future through architecture.” Since its inception in 2018 under the umbrella of the Tamayouz Excellence Award, the Dewan Award for Architecture has become a platform for empowering emerging talent and sparking dialogue on the role of design in shaping communities. Previous editions have challenged participants to reimagine everything from urban regeneration zones to national pavilions, with winning entries often pushing the boundaries of architectural storytelling and purpose.
